Keys to Networking

Things to keep in mind

  1. You won’t get anything if you don’t at least try to network
  2. Assume they are busy and their time is valuable
  3. Specifically, since you are trying to network with them, assume their time is more valuable than yours
  4. For introductions especially, avoid writing long or multiple paragraphs. Keep it short; you can always expand details in further messages but a long initial message will get ignored
  5. Be direct with what you want: nothing gets a message deleted faster than an obvious subterfuge where a job applicant probably wants a referral but is suggesting conversation to talk about their experience. If for some reason, you really are just learning about the industry (e.g. to inform a grad school decision), then clarify that in your initial email.
    1. Assume that the reader is going to assume you want a job referral because that is by far the most common request. Message accordingly.
  6. If you do want a job referral, be honest about your abilities:  If you don’t realistically think you’d be a strong (e.g. top 10-20%) candidate, then adjust your expectations accordingly
  7. If you do want a job referral, try to apply for the role first: it is much easier if your name is in the system and you can point the reader directly to the posting you care about.

Template I've sent to hiring managers

I've used this after applying if don't hear from HR within a few days

Hi [first name],

I noticed [that we had X in common] (e.g. both attended the same university, studied abroad in the same country, a part of the same networking group, etc. skip if not applicable) and that you were hiring for roles in my field. I’ve been working in [specific field] for the past few years but [short reason i’m leaving] and actively seeking similar roles. I actually already applied to [this role at your company] but flexible if there’s a better fit. I know HR can get swamped with applications, so I was hoping we could speak directly and see if I’d be a good match for your team. Thanks so much!
