This policy explains what happens to your information when you use whatstheimpact.com. It is written to describe what this site actually does, rather than to cover every scenario, and it is not legal advice.
Who runs this site
whatstheimpact.com is operated by Jonathan Hershaff. For any question about this policy, or to request deletion of your information, use the contact form.
What I collect, and when
I do not require an account, and you can read everything on this site without giving me anything.
- If you send me a message through the contact form, I receive your name, email address, and whatever you write. It is stored in this site’s database and also emailed to me, so that nothing is lost if the email fails. I use it to reply to you and to keep track of the conversation, and for nothing else.
- If you sign up for email updates, I receive your email address and store it with my email provider. You can unsubscribe from any message.
- If you visit any page, my host records standard server information, including your IP address, browser type, referring page, and the time of the request. This is ordinary web-server logging and I use it only to understand traffic and diagnose problems.
I do not sell your information, and I do not share it with anyone except the service providers listed below, who process it on my behalf.
Services this site relies on
Some parts of the site are provided by third parties. When you interact with those parts, they receive information directly, under their own privacy policies.
- IONOS hosts this website and provides its analytics. Server logs and aggregate traffic statistics are processed here.
- Teachable handles course purchases and delivery. If you buy a course, Teachable collects your details and payment information; I never see your full payment details.
- Stripe processes payments for 1:1 coaching sessions. Card details go directly to Stripe and are not stored by me.
- Bunny Fonts serves the typefaces used across the site. It is a privacy-first font service that does not log requests or set cookies, and it replaced Google Fonts here for that reason.
- YouTube hosts embedded videos where they appear. Videos load only after you consent, and YouTube may set cookies once they do.
- My email provider stores the list of subscribers and sends messages. If you never sign up, they never receive anything about you.
Spam checks on the contact form
The contact form checks for automated submissions by counting how many messages come from one visitor in an hour. That check uses a scrambled one-way version of your IP address which expires after an hour and is never stored with your message. There is no CAPTCHA, so nothing is loaded from Google.
Cookies
This site does not set advertising or tracking cookies of its own. Cookies may be set by the services above — analytics, embedded video, and the checkout providers — when you use those features. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site will still work.
Why I am allowed to hold this information
If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area, the legal bases are: your consent, when you sign up for email or accept an embedded video; performance of a contract, when you buy something; and legitimate interest, for basic server logging and site security.
How long I keep it
Email addresses stay on the list until you unsubscribe or ask me to remove them. Messages sent through the contact form are kept as long as the conversation is useful, and I clear out old ones periodically. Purchase records are retained by Teachable and Stripe under their own schedules, which are longer because of tax and accounting requirements.
Your rights
You can ask me what information I hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, and I will do so. Send the request through the contact form and I will respond as quickly as I reasonably can. If you are in the UK or EEA you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
This site is aimed at working data scientists and is not directed at children. I do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, I will update the date at the top of this page.
